101 Best Family Card Games

101 Best Family Card Games
ISBN13: 9780806986357
Price: £3.99
Publication Date: 3 Jun 1993
Published By: Sterling Publishing Co Inc.

I was so excited about this book.
Many of my childhood memories are of playing cards with my family.
I loved playing but I've forgotten most of the games we used to play.
It's something that I wanted to start doing with Little Red
now he is getting older.
Hubby also likes playing cards so I am sure we are going
to be using this book lots.

I think playing cards is a fantastic way to bring different generations
together to have fun.
At my mum and dad's we used to have 3 or 4 generations playing
and loads of extended family.

We even started a games evening where neighbours
used to come round and make an evening of it.

the book is separated into different sections.
  1. For The Family with very young children
  2. The war family
  3. The authors family
  4. The stops family
  5. The casino family
  6. The rummy family
  7. Trump games
  8. The whist family
  9. The hearts family
  10. Solitaire games
  11. What the terms mean
  12. Index
Each card game is broken down:
The Deal
To Win the game
The play

The book is really easy to understand.
As it keeps everything in the same format
it's easy to follow and understand each game.
I'm sure there are tons of games you'll see and remember.
There is soooo much enjoyment for all the family!
And don't worry if you are on your own
they even have solitaire games.

I think this would make a brilliant present for Christmas.
I'm sure it would make a fun afternoon for all the family!

This is a book that we will be using for years to come.
As Little Red grows up we'll be playing more and more of the games with him.

It's great fun!

The Thunderbolt Express ~ Book Review

The Thunderbolt Express by Matthew Porter (Monkey World)
ISBN: 9781570618772
Publication Date: 7 Nov 2013
Price: £12.99

 Published by: Sasquatch Books

Thunderbolt express is all about a magical train ride with Jango Jenkins
and his Dixieland Band, Oscar the magician,
Miss Trixie and her pug dog Napoleon.
This is about what happens when a pleasant journey goes all wrong.
The pug goes missing.
The bridge ahead is missing.
And the handle on the train brake is broken.
Only in Monkey World can the solution
to this pickle involve shedding all weight to attempt to fly the train!

The book is a fantastic imaginative story
with fantastic illustrations.
The story is short and each page only holds one or two sentences.
This works out really well as the pictures are so detailed
that kids will want to spend their time
checking out everything.

This will be one book that children
will bring out just to spend time trying to find
out everything that is going on in each picture.

Little Red enjoyed the story but he loved the pictures even more.

The story is a short but sweet one with a happy ending.
Kids who don't like suspense not like it
when they think the train is going to crash
into a swamp full of Crocodiles.
However they will love it when the train flies across the gap.

Overall I'd give this book 4 out of 5

Clicker 6 - Review Update & Dyslexia

Today I thought I would give you an update
on Little Red and his Dyslexia.

Things have been progressing slowly but they are progressing.
Little Red has been getting used to the Clicker 6 program.
This program is fantastic for schools & home.
You can add your own exercises as well as use the
free ones that you have access to.

At the moment we are just using the exercises from Clicker.
It has amazed me how the little things you don't think of make
such a difference.

The first exercise we looked at today was
the matching game:
Little Red would get one picture on screen
and then a number of difference pictures would appear
and he had to choose the matching one.
This may sound a simple game but Dyslexics have
problems with memory etc.
so it's a really useful puzzle.
The next exercise looked at how you get ready in the morning.
First the voice would say an example:
In which picture am I getting out of bed?
Little Red would then choose the correct one.
Little red then looked at each of the sentences
and put the words in the correct order.
He really enjoyed this and learnt to read quite a few new words.
I was really surprised about how enthralled he became.
I thought he would find it too like a classroom
exercise but he really enjoyed it.
He carried on well after the 15 mins were over.
Another exercise he looked at was making a snowman
The program reads out the words to the child
as you go.
Little Red loved the way you could add the sentences to the page
It meant that he could recognise the words himself.
If he wasn't sure once you press the . the program automatically reads it back to him.
You are able to alter the document at any point.
He was kept enthralled and entertained for quite a while.
We'll be using it on a more regular basis now.

The start of each exercises isn't as intuitive for him as I would like
but once I set him up on the program he could run through everything himself.
I think as he gets more homework from school we will be using this more and more.

I'm going to try and set-up my own exercise next and see how easy it is.

So I'll let you know how we both get on :-)

Making a Dream Catcher ~ Crafting with Kids

Little Red suffers from nightmares & night terrors.
To help him cope I decided to make him a dream catcher.
I told him if he had a nightmare and woke up
he was to throw it at the dream catcher
and it would stay there and wouldn't come back.
We decided to make them together.

First we Collect feathers.
You can buy them but we decided to collect them.

Then we bought some memory wire
Then we fed beads onto the wire
Once the beads were all on the hoop
I used some black electrical tape
to fasten the gap & attach the white yarn
It's then time to weave the yarn
to make the design of the web.
Once you've finished the web
tidy up your ends and attach a number of long pieces of yarn
Wrap the yarn round each feather attaching with cellotape.
And there you have your Dream Catcher.
If you don't have any beads you can always
use yarn wrapped around the wire instead
