Tales from the Arabian Nights ~ Book Review

Tales from the Arabian Nights
translated by Sir Richard Francis Burton
ISBN: 9781435143906
Publication Date: 7 Mar 2013
Published By: Fall River Press

This book is one of those books that should be in every families library.
The book is a beautiful heirloom that can be passed down through the family.

This book is a collection of 20 of the best known stories.
Among them are the best-known legends:
Sinbad the Sailor
Ali Baba and the forty thieves
Aladdin and the wonderful lamp

The book doesn't hold pictures but it does
hold beautifully designed pages.

The book is 661 pages long so is going to keep
you entertained for a long time.
The stories are also ones that you will want to read
again and again.

This is the original version of the book
so you need to be aware that the English is in old English.
Some of the terms used maybe taken differently in todays world.

On page two the King is sending presents to his brother:
King forthwith bade prepare handsome gifts,
such as horses with saddles of gem encrusted gold;
Mamelukes, or white slaves;
beautiful handmaids; high-breasted virgins;
and splendid stuffs and costly.

As you can see from this one paragraph
the language used is in an old English format.
Also the gifts given wouldn't be acceptable in today's society.

I would however say this is the first book my son was drawn to.
He is only 7 years old and wanted me to read this to him
straight away.
I read him a few pages and then stopped to ask if he actually understand
what had been said.
He had no problem understanding it.
He answered;
The king is sending his brother presents because he wants him
to come and visit him.
He might not understand all the language but he could
follow the story and he really enjoyed it.
I've agreed to read it to him on a regular basis
so this is going to be a book
we will be reading for a long time.

I received a copy of the book to review.
However all opinions expressed are my own.
